Civil War Veteran Gravesites in Salem, Oregon

chase_elmore.gif (33080 bytes) Chase, Elmore Y. -- Assistant Surgeon, 13th Ohio Infantry. Buried in Lee Mission Cemetery, Salem, Oregon.

E.Y. Chase is listed as the surveyor for a plan of Fort Hoskins, OR on a map in the collection of the Oregon Historical Society (call number OC/D39/F1). The Ohio Historical Society has in its collection a letter from E.Y. Chase to Adjutant General C.P. Buckingham accepting his commission as surgeon for the 13th Ohio, dated Aug. 28, 1861. All other information from gravesite.

hosler_jw.gif (30965 bytes) Hosler, Jacob W. -- Sergeant, Co. H, 24th Iowa Infantry. Buried in Lee Mission Cemetery, Salem, Oregon.

First name obtained from unit roster. The National Archives (via the National Park Service) list a Jacob W. as being in Co. G, but with a slightly different rank. USGenWeb lists Jacob W. Hosler as a 5th Sgt in Co. H. All other information from gravesite.

leabo_augustus.gif (32013 bytes) Leabo, Augustus C. (1842-1925) -- Private, Co. G, 4th Iowa Infantry. Enlisted July 4, 1861. Wounded in arm at Pea Ridge, AR in March, 1862). Buried in Lee Mission Cemetery, Salem, Oregon.

randle_samuel.gif (36590 bytes) Randle, Samuel A. (1839-1933) -- Co. H, 22nd Illinois Infantry. Buried in Lee Mission Cemetery, Salem, Oregon. 

No listing in unit roster under this name, but there is a Recruit Samuel A. Randall from Carlinville, IL listed in Co. H of the 122nd (as opposed to the 22nd) who mustered in Sep. 4, 1862 and out July 15, 1865. Samuel A. Randle is also listed as a 10-year-old male living in Macoupin County, IL in the Oct. 24, 1850 U.S. Census. All other information from gravesite.

steward_philo.gif (35151 bytes) Steward, Philo (1845-1930) -- Co. E, 163rd Ohio Infantry. Buried in Lee Mission Cemetery, Salem, Oregon.

Note: the 163rd was a 100-day unit that was mustered in May 12, 1864 and out September 10, 1864. All other information from gravesite. This man is possibly the son of Philo P. Steward, the co-founder o Oberlin College.

welch_william.gif (40159 bytes) Welch, William T. -- 5th Sergeant, Co. G, 18th Iowa Infantry. Buried in Lee Mission Cemetery, Salem, Oregon.

Note: National Park Service Soldiers and Sailors System lists a William J. Welch that is probably the same person. All other information from gravesite.
