Congress: Stand up to Bush!!

Below is a copy of the letter I just sent to Senator Wyden, followed by a similar letter was sent to Representative Hooley:

March 21, 2003
Salem, Oregon

Dear Senator Wyden:

If you really oppose this illegal war against Iraq;

If you really oppose President Bush's acts that usurp the Constitutionally-mandated authority of the Congress to be the sole body within our nation with the authority to declare war; and,

If you really believe that this is the wrong war for the wrong reasons;

Then do not support this war. At all.

This entire issue is too important for politicking. Our system of checks and balances is out of whack. You must take a stand that is principled and solid. It is certainly possible that you will take heat for such a position at the ballot box, but Congress must check the excesses of the White House. Which is worse, the proud ex-Senator who maintained his principles, or the Senator who mocked the seriousness of the office by being more concerned with keeping his seat?

This is not just about Iraq. This is about the future of our nation. We are in grave danger of becoming that which our founding fathers despised.

You have said that you are against this war. So don't give up. Take action! Do not support this war. Do not appropriate funds for it. Do not endorse the President's actions toward Iraq in any way. Let the world know that the people of the United States of America will not be duped into becoming the next Roman Empire.

People in the halls of Congress appear to be frightened, just as people in the streets of America are frightened, of the spectres that Mr. Bush raises. We are fighting Iraq out of fear (which is at the heart of all bullies), and this nation has never done that before. We are stronger, nobler, and better than that fear.

Do not stand silently mute. Do not give in to fear. Do not let the White House dictate.

Stop President Bush from destroying our republic.

Please. If you don't, who will?

Sincerely,

-Michael Heggen

Dear Rep. Hooley:

I see from your website that you have shifted into "support the troops" mode.

Please, please, please do not buy into the lie that "America must speak with one voice". That lie causes America to speak with the voice of George W. Bush and his cronies. His voice is not my voice, nor is it the voice of many millions of Americans (especially as people recognize the bill of goods we are being sold in place of our beloved Bill of Rights).

I have a number of friends in the military currently -- friends that I care deeply about. I don't want them to have to kill people for George W. Bush's war, nor do I want them to get hurt themselves in a war we don't need.

This war is illegal. This war is immoral. This war is unjust. This war is unnecessary. This war is wrong. This war is bad for our country and for the world.

If you really oppose this illegal war against Iraq;

If you really oppose President Bush's acts that usurp the Constitutionally-mandated authority of the Congress to be the sole body within our nation with the authority to declare war; and,

If you really believe that this is the wrong war for the wrong reasons;

Then do not support this war. At all.
