Kim and I met in Lausanne Hall at Willamette University on one of the first days I was at college in the fall of 1986. We were not initially attracted to each other (partly because Kim was two years ahead of me and partly because we were both dating someone else at the time), but we became friends. Kim lived across the hall from me. We would often study together in the hallway (actually, she did most of the studying -- I tended to read a book or talk). So it went the rest of my freshman year.

That summer (1987), my girlfriend broke up with me. I came back to Willamette in the fall and pined. I dated a a little the first semester, but towards the end of 1987, Kim and I started spending more time together. While we were on a Campus Ambassadors retreat on Valentine's Day, we exchanged our first kiss (hey, keep the nausea to yourself, pal...). And so it went the rest of my sophomore year.

Kim graduated and went off to med school in Portland in the fall of 1988. I was failing my classes miserably. I cut my classes back to part-time, and then dropped out of school altogether in January of 1989. I spent another year in Salem, depressed, trying to make up my mind what to do about this person who stood by me. I waffled. I hemmed and hawed. I gave Kim pretty much every excuse to tell me to take a flying leap.

She didn't. We were engaged to be married on Christmas Eve of 1989 (I know, I know.... mush, mush, mush). Two years later, we were married.

The guests came from near and far. The ceremony was a high-church-ish Episcopal wedding, complete with incense and Communion. The reception was in the parish hall and featured a whole roast pig (yes, we killed the fatted pig - well, we didn't, but someone did for us). Although many of the guests did not know each other, they all knew both of us, so there was no shortage of good conversation. The best man made an excellent toast, to which the groom responded somewhat long-windedly. After the reception, the young folks retired to our tiny one-bedroom apartment where we opened gifts and celebrated for another couple of hours. And a good time was had by all.
